Compare pot odds to odds given by bettor. Our equity is 38%, so we need pot odds of less than 38%. The lower the pot odds, the more profitable the call. Our pot odds are 12.5/33 which is 37%, and hence we just about have the pot odds to call. But first, a little Poker 101 for all you noobs out there – we’re talking about pot odds and pot equity. Most people have at least some understanding of odds in general. If you pick a number at random between 1 and 10, your odds of picking any specific number (say, 3 or 7) are exactly 1 in 10.
- Pot odds simply compare the size of the bet you have to call to the size of the pot. They are a mathematical expression of risk and reward that can then be used to make better plays both preflop and postflop. Whenever you see a statement like “I am getting 2:1 on a call” you are seeing pot odds expressed as a simplified ratio.

Pot odds in poker simply means the “price” that it costs you to continue with your hand. For example, if you’re in a hand where the pot is $100 and your opponent bets $50, you’re getting 3 to 1 pot odds to call. The pot is $150 (the $100 that’s already there plus the $50 bet) and it costs $50 to continue. Divide the $150 by $50 to get 3.

We provide 4 separate charts depending on where you are seated relative to the dealer. You can find out how to play the Blinds, Early Position, Middle Position, and Late Position.
After the flop, you can consult the Drawing Odds Chart at the bottom, but you will also have to develop your reads, pot odds and other skills to develop your post-flop strategies.
How to Read the Starting Hand Charts
